| Awards Laud Outstanding Performance |
Aviation Technology Director Jeff Beene announced the winners of the summer 2009 "TSTC Airmen of the Semester" awards at an Aviation Technology Cluster meeting held Aug. 19. The awards recognize an outstanding instructor and staff member in job performance and achievements, personal and professional development and extracurricular and community involvement.
Jeff Benavidez a Flight instructor pilot in the Aircraft Pilot Training Technology, was named "TSTC Airman of the Semester" recipient in the instructor category. A Certified Instrument Flight instructor and Multi-engine instructor, Jeff volunteered for, planned and led the first TSTC Future Flight Aerospace Camp for area high school students this summer. Through his organizational skills, creativity and care for the students, he created an event that set the standard for future TSTC aerospace camps to come.
Rosalinda Herrera, Aviation Cluster secretary and Aviation Maintenance Technology secretary, was selected as "TSTC Airman of the Semester" recipient in the staff category. A long-time TSTC veteran, she assumed her new duties as cluster secretary this past May. Throughout the semester Rosalinda worked tirelessly to create a fully functioning cluster administrative organization. She provided efficient, friendly and timely customer service to the staff, faculty and students of the Aviation Cluster and Aviation Maintenance Department.
Roger Grimes, Aviation Maintenance master instructor, was presented with a special lifetime achievement award in aviation maintenance education. Roger retired from TSTC on Aug. 31, after more than 23 years of service. A TSTC graduate, certified FAA Airframe & Powerplant mechanic and former FAA examiner, he returned to teach in the Aviation Maintenance Technology in 1985, where he taught in all areas and specialized in sheet metal, wood, fabric and finishes. Roger assisted in the development of L-3 employee training courses offered at TSTC and was instrumental in delivering these courses since 2000. Roger is a decorated U. S. Army veteran from Vietnam and is the recipient of the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in combat. He and his wife Darlene have been married more than 30 years and are residents of Axtell, where he served on the school board. They have a son, Scott, and a daughter, Amber. Amber and her husband, John Carter, have a daughter, Mabry.
